NEW YORK, New York --
Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, will spend the next four-and-a-half years of his life in prison, a judge ruled on Thursday.
Follieri was sentenced to 54 months behind bars and three years probation on Thursday, after pleading guilty to 14 counts of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering in a New York courtroom last month.
Last week, Follieri had asked the court to reduce his sentence to just 36 months, after initially agreeing not to appeal any sentence under 63 months as part of his plea deal.
However, prosecutors quickly countered, urging the judge not to show any leniency to Hathaway’s ex, who was arrested in June after allegedly posing as a representative of the Vatican to fleece wealthy investors in a real estate company that sought to buy and redevelop Roman Catholic Church property.
In asking for a reduced sentence, a spokesperson for Follieri told Access Hollywood his client was regretful of his crimes.
“It is my client’s sole objective to convey to the court that he is most assuredly remorseful for his actions. As he awaits sentencing, his family’s well being continues to remain a priority for him at this time,” Follieri’s rep said in a statement.
During his initial sentencing in September, the 30-year-old Follieri read a brief statement to the judge where he said, “I knew what I was doing was wrong.”
During the hearing on Thursday, Follieri addressed the court, reading a prepared statement in Italian.
In the statement, Follieri said he wanted the court to know he was raised in a good family with good morals and he knows he has shamed his family and the church he loves.
