WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --
America goes to the polls in eight days, and the candidates turned on the star power in the battleground state of Florida over the weekend.
Matt Damon was out supporting Barack Obama, while “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselbeck introduced Sarah Palin at a rally.
Damon, along with actresses Alicia Silverstone and Kerry Washington, is taking part in the Florida VoteFest ‘08, a program aimed at getting people to the polls on Election Day.
“I don’t think anybody who wants Barack Obama to be president can afford to be complacent or rest at all,” the actor told the crowd.
Damon told People he feels the election is so important, that he has put it ahead of acting for the time being.
“I took time off from acting until the end of the year to be with my family and enjoy our new daughter,” he told the mag at a Barack Obama rally Sunday in West Palm Beach. “But it is very important for me to do what I can to help the Obama campaign so people will go out and vote. We need change in this country and now is the time to be sure that happens.”
The Obama campaign wasn’t the only team of White House hopefuls exercising some celebrity muscle in the Sunshine State.
Hasselbeck, the co-host of “The View,” introduced Governor Sarah Palin at a rally in Tampa on Sunday, where she addressed the recent media scrutiny of the cost of Palin’s wardrobe.
“Now, with everything going on in the world, seems a bit odd,” Elisabeth said of the attention Palin’s $150,000 wardrobe has recently received. “But let me tell you, this is deliberately sexist.”
Elisabeth commended Palin on her attire, especially the Alaska governor’s choice in accessories.
“She sure is a woman who knows how to dress,” Elisabeth told the crowd. “I’m most impressed personally by her accessories, like the flag pin she wears to honor her son, and to honor our military men and women who are fighting right now abroad to defend our right to be here today.”
Adding, “They didn’t list that accessory… because they know it’s priceless.”
