It was hot and dusty during filming in one of the world’s most remote locations. But Nicole Kidman says the prospect of a smooch with Hugh Jackman eased the troubles of working on the Outback romance, “Australia.”
“Obviously we’re in character when we kiss, but it was good to go to work,” a laughing Kidman told a news conference Tuesday ahead of the worldwide premiere of the film, in which Kidman’s prim British aristocrat character falls in love with Jackman’s rugged cattleman in World War II-era Australia.

Very cute rapport. She said he'll lose so he can vote for her. Guttenberg and I talked about living for the moment. He lost his labrador of 15 years two nights ago, but is taking it OK. He said he won't get another dog.
8:10 PM — Tilda Swinton and her boyfriend hit the bar. She enjoyed a celebratory glass of white wine.
8:16 PM — It was a little big surprising that there was only one or two super brief claps when Tom Hanks said the "Best Short Documetary" would be announced by servicemen and servicewoman in Iraq.

Details of the settlement weren’t disclosed, and the 40-year-old actress wasn’t in court. Her lawyer, John Kelly, said Kidman suffered considerable embarrassment and distress over the report. The newspaper’s “Spy” column reported last month that Kidman carried a bottle of a competitor’s perfume while she was in London to promote her new film, “The Golden Compass.”

It’s a foregone conclusion that “The Golden Compass” is a great looking movie, but I couldn’t tell you what it was about for a lick ‘o beans. Based upon the book “Northern Lights” — the first installment of the “His Dark Materials” fantasy trilogy written by Philip Pullman — the film is chock full of the best special effects that a reported $180 million budget can buy. But unless you are even vaguely familiar with the mythology found in the novels, then you’re going to need a real compass to find your way around the densely convoluted story.
