On The Download: Van Morrison

November 17, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --

Van Morrison has been a staple in my life since the day I was born. He’s always been my dad’s favorite, so I grew up listening to him (whether I liked it or not). And my dad would be very glad to know… I did like it. As a mixture of jazz, soul, and Celtic/folk fusion, Van Morrison is one of those artists that have a little something for everyone.

I’ve seen him in concert a few times before, but when I found out he was performing at the Hollywood Bowl, I was excited about going to the concert for a couple reasons: I had never been to the Hollywood Bowl before, and… Van was revisiting his seminal 1968 album, “Astral Weeks.”

On The Download: Is Beyonce Finally Coming Into Her Own With ‘I Am… Sasha Fierce’?

October 27, 2008

--

As the resident mainstream pop music fanatic for “On The Download” at Access, there aren’t many albums that I’m more excited for than Beyonce’s third solo effort, the double-disc, “I Am… Sasha Fierce,” which comes out on November 18.

While both of Beyonce’s new tracks are odes to feminism, the first track, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” is a sassy dancefloor step anthem.

The second track, “If I Were A Boy,” from the ballad half of the new album, is a gender-war song for the ages.

If these first two singles (which is all that most of the world has heard so far) are any indication, this album looks to be a vast improvement over “B’Day” and more in line with her 2003 solo debut, “Crazy In Love.”

On The Download: Sarah McLachlan & Christina Aguilera, Greatest Hits

September 19, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --

Two of my favorite artists from the RCA Records group are back this fall with Greatest Hits collections, and along with their respective retrospectives, both of them are releasing new songs along with their compilations.

First up, is Sarah McLachlan, whose 16-track anthology, “Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan,” will be released on October 7.

Next up, comes Christina Aguilera’s “Keeps Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits,” which will be available for purchase on November 11, exclusively through Target.

Often, I’m cynical about Greatest Hits collections – especially for younger artists – I always feel like, “Come back when you have Tina Turner’s career – THEN, you can put out a Greatest Hits collection.”

These two, however, are going to be welcome additions to my library.

There was a glimmer of hope back at the turn of the 21st century, when dance music almost got “cool” again, but it was quickly eclipsed. Sure, every once in a while the occasional Paul Oakenfeld mix crosses over, but dance ain’t what it used to be.

Still, I’m a big fan of the genre. And believe it or not, Billboard still tracks it on their Singles Charts.
