Weeks after the passing of Oscar winner and humanitarian, Paul Newman, Hollywood’s elite took to the stage to honor and raise funds for one of the late star’s charities.
Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Sean Penn, Warren Beatty and Casey Affleck were among the A-listers who hit the stage at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall on Monday evening, performing a reading of “The World of Nick Adams,” to benefit The Painted Turtle, a medical specialty camp in California, which helps provide hope and joy for children with life threatening illnesses. And, according to Danny Glover, who also joined the cast, though the night was for the children, it was also in celebration of their late friend.

Up until now, it was a foregone conclusion that while Iron Man was certainly one of the more popular Marvel Comics superheroes created by Stan Lee to emerge from the early 60s, he wasn’t an instantly recognizable icon like Spider-Man, the Hulk or the Fantastic Four. 7:48 PM — Wesley Snipes and I just talked a little. Asked him how he was to have the IRS issue over. He said, he was, "much relieved." And when I pressed whether it was a good feeling, he gave an emphatic, "Hell yeah!" He's looking forward to getting back to the business of making movies.
8:01 PM — Just talked with Steve Guttenberg and Marlee Matlin and asked them who's going to win. Marlee said she was, and when I asked who was going down in flames, she pointed to Guttenberg. Very cute rapport. She said he'll lose so he can vote for her. Guttenberg and I talked about living for the moment. He lost his labrador of 15 years two nights ago, but is taking it OK. He said he won't get another dog.
8:10 PM — Tilda Swinton and her boyfriend hit the bar. She enjoyed a celebratory glass of white wine.
8:16 PM — It was a little big surprising that there was only one or two super brief claps when Tom Hanks said the "Best Short Documetary" would be announced by servicemen and servicewoman in Iraq.

CHEERS TO KIRSTIE : Kirstie Alley has performed her own heroic deed, by supplying truckloads of supplies to help residents and their animals recover from the tornado that nearly destroyed the Kansas town of Greensburg last week. reports that Alley (herself a native of Kansas) and a group of volunteers set up a tent to give out bottled water, candy, T-shirts, hats, socks and other supplies. They also brought food, bowls, cardboard carriers and other items for animals. Alley has reportedly paid for everything herself, and has been in the devastated town since Thursday. According to the report, she expects to be in Greensburg for several days.
